But somewhere between the early days — when the CFO could review every payment before it left the building — and the present, when tens of thousands of line items hit the ledger each month, something quietly broke. The irony is that the very growth treasury teams are hired to support is the same force that erodes their ability to see what is actually happening with company money. Understanding why requires a clear-eyed look at how transaction complexity scales — and why the tools and mental models that worked at low transaction counts stop working long before the numbers get truly large.

When transaction counts were low, this was fine. Treasury could use ERP as a record and rely on human judgment to do the analytical work. As transaction volume grew, the ERP remained the same — a faithful recorder of individual events — while the human capacity to process those records did not scale with them.

The result is a visibility gap that widens with every quarter of growth. More data enters the system. Less of it gets meaningfully reviewed. The total number of transactions processed climbs. The percentage of that total actually examined by a human eye falls. And buried somewhere in the data — perhaps in a server log that nobody checks, perhaps in a reconciliation file that hasn't been opened since the last audit — is the anomaly that will eventually matter.

The Reconciliation Burden

One of the most immediate ways the visibility problem manifests is in reconciliation. When distinct transactions can be matched one-to-one with corresponding records — invoice to payment, order to receipt — reconciliation is straightforward. When transaction counts grow faster than the reconciliation infrastructure, mismatches accumulate.

Payments get matched to the wrong invoices. Credits are applied to the wrong counterparty. A transaction that occurred in one reporting period is captured in another. These are not catastrophic individually. But they compound. Over time, the reconciliation backlog itself becomes a source of opacity — a body of unresolved items that treasury cannot confidently classify as errors, timing differences, or fraud.

By the time an organization recognizes it has a reconciliation problem, the problem is typically already significant. The number of transactions processed in the gap period is often in the thousands. The manual effort required to resolve them is substantial. Organizations that maintain strong treasury visibility at high transaction volumes share a few common characteristics.

First, they distinguish early and consistently between different transaction types. The total is still important, but it is not the only number that matters.

Second, they invest in contextual data, not just transactional data. They know not just that a payment was executed, but what was the approval chain, when was the payment initiated, what is the historical relationship with this recipient, and how does this value compare to prior transactions with the same counterparty. This context is what allows pattern recognition to work.

Third, they build exception-based workflows rather than review-based ones. Rather than attempting to review all transactions — an impossibility at scale — they define what normal looks like and route only the transactions that fall outside those bounds to human reviewers.
