A stablecoin is a digital asset designed to hold a stable value, typically by being pegged to fiat currency and backed by cash, cash-equivalent, or other reserve structures. Moving $10 million of USDT into euros in a company bank account is not the same problem as buying a coffee with a digital asset. At institutional size, stablecoin-to-fiat conversion is a liquidity, compliance, and banking-access problem all at once — and in 2026 it has become one of the defining capabilities of the OTC market.

The context has changed fast. The stablecoin market now sits north of $300 billion in market capitalisation, roughly 13% of the total value of all crypto assets, with dollar-denominated tokens making up around 99% of supply. In February 2026, stablecoins settled about $7.2 trillion in a single month — more than the US ACH network. Stablecoins are no longer just collateral for trading volatile cryptocurrencies. They are working capital, and working capital eventually has to become fiat money.

For treasury teams, institutional investors, OTC desks, and finance professionals handling high-volume redemptions and payouts, that shift changes the core question from “what is a stablecoin?” to “how do we convert it into bankable fiat, in the right jurisdiction, with the right counterparty, and without operational failure?” That is the problem this article addresses: the main stablecoin models, the 2026 rules shaping conversion in major markets, how large OTC stablecoin-to-fiat flows actually work, where demand is concentrated, what can break in execution, how to assess conversion partners, and what is changing next.

Not all stablecoins behave the same way at the point of conversion: to understand how stablecoins work, start with the fact that they are designed to track a reference asset, and the differences matter when you are quoting size.

The four main types are fiat-backed, crypto-backed, commodity-backed, and algorithmic.

Fiat-collateralized (fiat backed stablecoins). These are digital representations of fiat currency backed one-for-one by reserve assets — cash and short-dated government paper held by a stablecoin issuer, though a fiat-backed stablecoin can still lose its peg if confidence in reserves weakens. USD Coin and Tether (USDT) dominate here; USDT is backed by reserves and pegged 1:1 to the US dollar, and together they account for the large majority of the stablecoin market. For an OTC desk, these are the cleanest to price, because redemption at par with regulated issuers provides a hard floor under the market value.

Crypto-collateralized. Overcollateralized with other crypto assets. These maintain a stable value through collateral buffers rather than reserve backing at a bank, which introduces basis risk during periods of high volatility.

Commodity-backed. These are tokens linked to physical commodities such as gold or other assets, rather than cash reserves.

Algorithmic stablecoins. These attempt to maintain price stability through supply mechanics rather than reserves. These structures carry high financial risk and can fail when market confidence drops. After Terra, they have essentially been written out of the institutional market — MiCA excludes them from the e-money token category, and no serious desk warehouses them.

For high-volume flow, most desks restrict inventory to a short list of popular stablecoins with credible reserve backing, transparent attestations, and deep secondary liquidity across crypto exchanges. Multiple stablecoins in the book is normal; unlimited optionality is not.

The 2026 regulatory framework and regulatory oversight

Regulatory clarity is the single biggest change since 2024, and it directly shapes how conversion is executed. The rapid growth of the stablecoin market is a key reason regulators around the world have increased scrutiny.

In the United States, the GENIUS Act — signed in July 2025 under the Trump administration — created a federal regulatory framework for payment stablecoins and restricted stablecoin issuance to permitted issuers. Through 2026 the rulemaking has been filling in: the OCC and FDIC issued proposed rules on issuer standards, including a requirement that permitted issuers redeem a payment stablecoin within two business days, while FinCEN and OFAC proposed treating such stablecoins' issuers as financial institutions under the Bank Secrecy Act, with full AML and sanctions programmes to counter illicit financial activity. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission, for its part, has been moving toward accepting tokenized assets and stablecoins as collateral in derivatives markets — a signal of how far these instruments have travelled into the broader financial system.

In the European Union, MiCAR took effect in June 2023 and governs the same territory through two categories: e-money tokens referencing a single fiat currency, and asset-referenced tokens referencing a basket or external reference. Stablecoins issued without conventional reserve backing, including algorithmic designs, are treated very restrictively under MiCAR in Europe. By early 2026 roughly twenty EMT issuers had been authorised and exactly zero ART issuers — a useful indication of where the regime's weight falls. Reserve composition rules require a meaningful share of reserves to sit as deposits at EU credit institutions, and the transitional period closed on 1 July 2026.

Elsewhere, regulatory bodies in the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, the UAE and Japan have built their own regimes for virtual assets, while much of the wider world is doing the same, and central banks and the Bank for International Settlements continue to scrutinise what large-scale stablecoin adoption means for financial stability and monetary transmission in other countries. For a desk, the practical consequence is simple: which stablecoins you can hold, and which fiat rails you can settle into, now depends on jurisdiction as much as on price.

How a high-volume conversion of algorithmic stablecoins actually works

Here is the mechanics of a typical institutional off-ramp, start to finish. Stablecoins aim to reduce volatility and make transfers more practical than volatile cryptocurrencies for certain uses.

Practical uses include sending money internationally and avoiding crypto price swings, and they represent about 30% of all cryptocurrency transaction volume.

1. Onboarding and counterparty risk. Before the first trade, the desk completes KYB, source-of-funds and source-of-wealth checks, sanctions screening, and wallet analytics on the client's deposit addresses. For regulated clients — PSPs, EMIs, banks, exchanges — this is where regulatory oversight and consumer protection obligations on both sides get reconciled.

2. Quoting. The client requests a price for, say, 5 million USDT into EUR. The desk quotes a firm, all-in rate that includes the stablecoin-to-dollar leg and the FX leg. Unlike an exchange order book, the price is agreed before execution, so there is no slippage and no market impact — the key reason large tickets go OTC rather than through crypto exchanges.

3. Transfer and confirmation. The client sends the stablecoin to the desk's whitelisted address. Chain selection matters: fees, finality time, and liquidity differ materially across networks, and desks typically require a set number of confirmations before releasing fiat.

4. Hedging and inventory management. The desk either nets the position against opposite client flow, sells into the secondary market, or redeems directly with the issuer. Redemption with regulated issuers is cheapest at scale but slower; the secondary market is instant but costs basis points. Managing that trade-off across multiple stablecoins is the actual craft of running a desk.

5. Fiat settlement. Payout goes out via SEPA, SWIFT, Faster Payments, ACH, or a local rail in the destination market for everyday transactions once funds hit fiat rails. This is where most conversions succeed or fail — not on crypto execution, but on whether the desk has banking partners willing and able to move that volume, on that day, into that jurisdiction.

6. Reporting. Trade confirmations, transaction records, and Travel Rule data are produced for the client's own compliance and audit trail.

Where the friction actually sits

Banking access. A desk is only as good as its bank accounts. Payment cards, local collection accounts, and multi-currency IBANs are what turn a crypto trade into usable fiat.

Timing mismatch. Blockchains settle continuously; fiat rails do not. Weekend and after-hours conversion means someone is carrying overnight risk, and that has a price.

Depeg and market volatility. Even fiat-backed tokens trade a few basis points off par when market demand shifts. On large tickets, that gap is real money.

Concentration. Liquidity is heavily concentrated in a handful of issuers and chains, and as of 2025 around 90% of stablecoin market cap was in Tether or USDC. By October 2025, about 97% of fiat-backed stablecoins were pegged to the US dollar by market capitalization. Diversification of counterparties is not paranoia; it is operational hygiene.

Corridors and cross border payments: where the demand comes from

The heaviest institutional off-ramp demand is not in New York or Zurich. It is in emerging markets — Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana, Brazil, Argentina and Mexico across Latin America, plus the Middle East and Southeast Asia — where businesses hold digital dollars because local currency access is expensive or slow. Stablecoins play a vital role in cross-border payments in exactly these corridors, and the conversion leg into local fiat is where the value is captured. In everyday life for a treasury team in Lagos or São Paulo, the question is not whether digital currencies work; it is whether someone will convert them into spendable local money by Friday.

What to look for in a conversion partner

  • Regulatory status. A named licence in a named jurisdiction, verifiable on a public register.

  • Segregation and safeguarding. Client funds separated from operating capital, with a documented flow of funds.

  • Depth on the pairs you need, including minor currencies rather than only the US dollar and euro.

  • Firm quotes with no post-trade re-pricing.

  • Redundant banking, so one partner's outage is not your outage.

  • Coverage windows that match your operational reality, including weekends.

Conclusion

Three trends will shape the next eighteen months. Euro and non-dollar stablecoins will grow from a low base as MiCA-authorised supply matures. Tokenized money market funds and other yield-bearing instruments will compete with idle stablecoin balances now that yield farming is no longer the default use of parked capital. And bank-issued tokens and tokenized deposits will start to blur the line between a stablecoin and a bank liability.

None of that removes the core requirement. As long as value moves on-chain and obligations are denominated in fiat, someone has to stand between the two markets with liquidity, licences, and bank accounts.
